James McCullar Architecture, PC (JMA) is committed to excellence in housing and community design.  Since its formation as James McCullar & Associates, the firm has provided design services for both the private and public sectors for new construction,
adaptive reuse and modernization. In 2006 JMA assumed the practice of Penny Yates,
an accomplished housing architect and teacher.

JMA's work has been recognized through numerous awards such as the AIA Honor Award for Urban Design for the Jamaica Market; BSA/AIANY Housing Design Awards for Sondra Thomas Apartments and Northside Terrace; Build Brooklyn Award for State Renaissance Court; and inclusion of The Byland Solar House in the centennial exhibition and publication "The Making of an Architect 1881-1981, Columbia University". In 1999, James McCullar was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in recognition of his significant contributions to the profession for urban housing and community design. Senior Associates Kenneth Bamburak and Richard H. Schafer have been responsible for overseeing the successful completion of a range of projects that include:

  • Community & Urban Design

  • Affordable & Market Rate Housing

  • Adaptive Reuse & Modernization

  • Private Residential & Offices

JMA is experienced in working with private developers, public agencies, and community organizations, often in public-private partnerships. We have been very successful in working with developers in design-build RFP programs, where innovative design solutions are essential for success. These experiences have given us an understanding of the challenges and opportunities presented by different contexts, programs, budgets, and approvals procedures required to achieve the best designs for both owners and the community. We offer a full range of architectural services that are fully integrated and coordinated with engineering and other consultant services needed for each project.
